Changed in His Presence

Humility

“We must lead with the authority of a shepherd and also with the humility of a sheep.”

Obed Martinez Destiny Church Indio, California

Humility. Why is that important in those who lead?

• Humility allows us to walk in submission to those over us. Regardless of your leadership position there is someone over you in authority. You are accountable to someone. When we walk in submission to those in authority over us it provides a model for those we lead to also walk in submission.

• Humility enables us to recognize our insufficiencies and turn to God as the all-sufficient One. 2 Corinthians 3:5 reminds us, “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;”

• Not only does humility allow us to turn to God but it also frees us to turn to others. When we walk in humility we recognize that we are not a “one man show.” We understand that we are dependent on others in the Body of Christ to help us accomplish those things God has placed in our hearts.

• Humility protects our hearts from offense. When we walk in humility before God we yield to His sovereignty—recognizing that even offenses have been allowed for our ultimate good (Romans 8:28, James 1:2-4). This yielding allows us to be gracious and peaceable to those who have caused the offense. And it also instills confidence that God will work on our behalf.
